Answers a natural language question with cited synthesis, combining Tako's curated data, charts, and web sources into a structured response
Answer a question with cited synthesis
A structured response containing a synthesized, cited text answer to the query, along with data cards (which may include charts, entity nodes, and metric references), web source citations, and graph node metadata. Cards link to Tako's knowledge graph and can be resolved for further detail or pinned in future searches.
POSThttps://tako.com/api/mpp/v1/answer?utm_source=zero.xyzUse this endpoint when you need a synthesized, cited answer to a natural language research question — especially when the question involves data trends, company comparisons, or factual claims that benefit from both Tako's curated knowledge graph and live web retrieval. Prefer this over /v1/search when you want a composed answer rather than a raw list of results, and over /v1/runs (async agent) when you need a synchronous response. Choose DEEP effort for higher-quality results on complex research queries, INSTANT for lowest latency with cached data, and FAST (default) for a balanced response.
| Field | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
| queryrequired | string | Natural language search query. |
| effort | string | Public effort taxonomy for search and answer. FAST is the default. INSTANT serves cached embeds without a new data retrieval and works in all environments. On /v1/answer it also writes the answer with the fastest synthesis model, so it trades answer quality for latency. On /v1/answer FAST and DEEP both write the answer with a stronger model. DEEP also widens Tako retrieval and adds a second, higher-quality reranking pass; it's slower and bills at a premium tier. |
| locale | string | BCP-47 locale tag for language and formatting. |
| sources | object | Per-source settings. The search includes an index only if its field is present. The Tako data source is named `data`. Tako still accepts the legacy key `tako` as a synonym and maps it to `data` before validation. |
| location | — | Optional coordinates of the end user. Resolves the location for implicit-location queries (for example, weather) and, when `timezone` is absent, the timezone Tako renders preview images in. An explicit location in the query overrides these coordinates. |
| timezone | — | IANA timezone (for example, 'America/New_York') Tako renders preview images in. Defaults to the zone at `location` when you send coordinates. Card text keeps each surface's own timezone. |
| country_code | string | ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country code for localization. |
| output_schema | — | JSON Schema for structured output. Tako fills it from the same evidence it uses to write `answer`, and returns it in `structured_output`. Requires effort 'fast' or 'deep'; on 'instant' the request returns 400. Supported subset: the object, array, string, number, integer, and boolean types, plus `items`, `enum`, `required`, `description`, and `additionalProperties: false`. A type may be nullable as `["number", "null"]`, which is how you let Tako signal 'no evidence' rather than filling a zero. `title`, `examples`, `format`, and `default` are accepted and ignored — they constrain nothing. Caps: 16KB total, depth 5, 64 properties, 512 characters per description. Violations return 400. If Tako can't fill the schema, `structured_output` is absent and `structured_output_error` says why — the answer and the cards still return. |
| variable_cost | — | Return data from sources priced per unit, such as web traffic and SEO data. Such data adds a charge above the request's own price, which the response's `usage` object reports as `variable_cost`. Set it to false and each such card is a placeholder with its title and no data points. Leave it out and your account's default applies: on for a contract account with signed terms, off otherwise. A contract account without signed terms gets placeholders whatever you send. |
| include_related | — | Applies to POST /v3/search only. Return follow-up query suggestions in `related`. Omit this field to disable them. The value sets the maximum number of suggestions, from 1 to 20. POST /v1/answer accepts this field but ignores it: the answer response has no `related` field. |
| output_settings | — | Settings that control the response shape. |
| Field | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
| cards | array | Tako cards backing the answer; cards[0] is the lead card — the best one to show alongside the answer. |
| usage | — | |
| answerrequired | string | Synthesized text answer. |
| request_idrequired | string | |
| web_results | array | |
| structured_output | — | Your output_schema, filled. Absent when the request carried no output_schema, or when Tako couldn't fill it — check structured_output_error. |
| structured_output_error | — | Why structured_output is absent. Present only on a structured request that failed. |
