How this service works
European Central Bank euro foreign exchange reference rate for a pair - the official daily fix used for accounting, invoicing and reporting - latest or any date in the last 90 days. The ECB publishes EUR/XXX only, so inverse and cross rates are computed from the same fix and named in rate_derivation. One fix per TARGET working day, not a tradable market rate. Use when: Convert or report an amount at an official daily rate both sides of a contract can verify against the ECB.
Output
A JSON object containing the exchange rate (as a string decimal), the base and quote currency codes, the date the rate applies to, whether the rate was directly published by the ECB or derived as an inverse or cross rate, the published ECB pairs used in the calculation, an optional note explaining if the returned date differs from the requested date (e.g. weekend or TARGET closing day), and metadata including source, version, and freshness indicator.

Side effects
- Requested currency not in ECB reference rate list for that date — endpoint may return an error or empty result
- Date outside the 90-day window — request rejected
- Date is a weekend or TARGET closing day — the latest prior fix is returned with a note field explaining the substitution
- ECB has not yet published the fix for the current day (before ~16:00 CET) — prior day fix returned with a note
- Malformed ISO 4217 currency code (not exactly 3 letters) — validation error from schema
- Non-TARGET working day requested — fallback rate returned transparently
