Convert a one-line US street address into coordinates using the US Census Bureau Geocoder. Returns the standardised matched address, latitude and longitude to 6 decimal places, the TIGER/Line segment and parsed address components. Coordinates are interpolated along street address ranges, not rooftop or parcel positions. No match is a normal answer, not an error. Use when: Convert this US street address to latitude and longitude.

Returns a paginated list of candidate matches, each containing: latitude and longitude (6 decimal places, TIGER interpolated), standardized matched address string, parsed address components (street name, number range, direction, suffix, city, state, ZIP), TIGER/Line segment ID, side of street, and precision type. Choose this endpoint when you need to geocode US street addresses using authoritative Census Bureau data and can tolerate interpolated (not rooftop) precision. Ideal for bulk or automated workflows where cost-per-call matters ($0.003 USDC) and where TIGER/Line segment metadata or parsed address components are useful. Prefer over proprietary geocoders when open government data provenance is required or when no API key management is desired. Not suitable for non-US addresses or when rooftop/parcel-level precision is required.
Side effects
- No match found — Census Bureau returns zero candidates for unrecognized or malformed addresses (normal, not an error; items array is empty)
- Address outside the US — endpoint only covers US addresses; non-US input will return no match
- Address too short or vague (under 5 characters) — rejected by input validation before upstream call
- Ambiguous address with multiple candidates — all candidates returned up to the limit; agent should use pagination to review all matches
- Rate limit or payment failure — 402 response if x402 payment not completed
