How this service works
Turn a company-name fragment or stock ticker into the SEC EDGAR identifiers. Searches the SEC listed-security index and returns ranked matches with the 10-digit CIK, ticker, registered name and listing exchange. Deterministic ranking: ticker exact, then name exact, then name prefix, then name contains. Use it for names — the other company.us.* capabilities take a ticker directly. Use when: Which SEC filer and CIK does the company name "Apple" belong to?
Output
Returns a ranked list of matches (up to 25), each containing the 10-digit CIK, ticker symbol, registered company name, and listing exchange. Also includes pagination info (total matches, has_more, offset) and match metadata (query string, match_type indicating whether it was a ticker exact, name exact, name prefix, or name contains match). Source is SEC EDGAR near-live data.

Use this endpoint when you have a company name or name fragment and need to resolve it to a canonical SEC EDGAR CIK before calling other SEC-based capabilities. It is specifically designed for name-to-identifier resolution; other Eckari company.us.* endpoints accept a ticker directly and do not perform this resolution step. Prefer this over generic web search when you need a deterministic, structured, ranked result from the official SEC listed-security index.
Side effects
- Query string too short or empty — returns 400 validation error
- No matching company found — returns empty items array with total=0
- Ambiguous name fragment returns many low-confidence results — caller must inspect match_type and rank
- Rate limiting or payment failure (x402) — returns 402 Payment Required
- Ticker not listed in SEC index (e.g. OTC-only or foreign-only) — may return no results or wrong entity
