Search the UK Companies House register by name or keyword and return matching companies with company number, register status and a derived is_active, type, incorporation and cessation dates and the register's one-line address snippet. Use this first when you only have a name, then call the per-company capabilities with the returned company_number. Ordering is the register's own, echoed as match_rank — a position, not a relevance score. Use when: Look up a UK company by name.
Output
Returns a paginated list of matching companies, each with: company_name, company_number, status (e.g. active, dissolved, closed), is_active (boolean), type (e.g. ltd, plc, uk-establishment), date_of_creation, date_of_cessation (null if still active), and address_snippet. Also returns pagination metadata (total results, offset, has_more, next_offset) and echoes the original query. Results are ordered by the register's own match_rank (position, not relevance score).

Use this endpoint when you have only a company name or keyword and need to resolve it to a Companies House company_number before calling per-company detail endpoints. Prefer this over per-company lookup endpoints when the company number is unknown. Use the returned company_number from this search to chain into profile, filings, or accounts endpoints. Best suited for UK-registered entities; not applicable for companies registered outside the UK.
Side effects
- Query too short (under 2 chars) — returns validation error
- No matching companies found — returns empty items array with total=0
- offset exceeds 10,000 — returns validation error
- Rate limiting or payment failure via x402 — returns 402 Payment Required
- Companies House API downstream outage — returns 5xx error
- Query returns unexpected company types not handled by caller
