Find Legal Entity Identifiers by company name in the global GLEIF register, optionally narrowed to one country. Returns the LEI, legal name, registration and entity status, jurisdiction, legal address and the local registry the entity is registered at — the identifier bridge between national company registers worldwide. Use when: What is the LEI for this company?
Output
Returns a paginated list of matching legal entities from the GLEIF register, each including the LEI code, official legal name, language of the name, entity status (ACTIVE/INACTIVE), LEI registration status (ISSUED/RETIRED/etc.), jurisdiction, full legal address (street lines, city, region, postal code, country), the company registration number at the local registry, and the name and GLEIF registry code of the local business registry. Also includes pagination metadata (total results, offset, limit, has_more flag, next_offset).

Use this endpoint when you need to look up a Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) by company name and have no LEI to start with. Ideal for KYC, AML, trade reporting compliance (MiFID II, EMIR, Dodd-Frank), and any workflow requiring the standardised 20-character ISO 17442 LEI. Prefer this over national company register lookups when you need a globally portable identifier rather than a local registration number. Use the country parameter to narrow results when searching common names that appear in multiple jurisdictions.
Side effects
- Query too short (under 2 characters) returns a validation error
- Country code not a valid ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 format returns a validation error
- Offset exceeds 9900 cap — GLEIF refuses deep pagination beyond 10,000 records
- No entities match the name query — returns an empty items array
- GLEIF upstream unavailable — service may return a 503 or degraded response
- Limit exceeds 25 cap — capped automatically or returns a validation error
