How this service works

Official National Weather Service forecast for any US coordinate - six 12-hour day/night periods by default, or hourly - each with temperature in C and F, precipitation probability, a wind speed range in km/h, wind direction and a short forecast, plus the NWS issue time so an agent can judge its age. detail=full adds the narrative, icon, dewpoint and humidity. United States, its territories and coastal waters only. Use when: What is the weather forecast for these US coordinates?

Output

A JSON object containing an array of forecast periods, each with: period name (e.g. 'Tonight', 'Wednesday'), start/end times, daytime flag, temperature in both Celsius and Fahrenheit, short forecast text, wind direction, wind speed range in km/h, and precipitation probability percentage. With detail=full, also includes NWS narrative text, icon URL, dewpoint, and humidity. The query echo and NWS issue time are also returned so the agent can assess data freshness.

Prefer this over raw NWS API calls because it normalizes the NWS response, provides dual temperature units, and returns structured wind ranges. Best for US-only use cases; do not use for international weather lookups.

Side effects

Coordinates outside US territories or coastal waters return an error (NWS only covers US)
Invalid lat/lon values outside -90 to 90 or -180 to 180 ranges are rejected
NWS upstream outages may cause delayed or failed responses
Requesting hourly=true but using period_limit parameter (instead of hours) may cause confusion — they are separate parameters
Coordinates in US waters far from forecast grid points may return no data
